Department of Surveying Engineering

About the Department

The Surveying Engineering Degree Program trains prospect engineers who will be qualified for the practical application of Sciences and technologies involved in acquiring, storing, managing, processing, integrating, and visualizing geographic and spatially referenced information as well as integrating the data for different kind of analyses.  Generally the graduate of the program will be a professional person with the academic qualifications and technical expertise to conduct one, or more, of the following activities; determine, measure and represent land, three dimensional objects, point fields and trajectories; assemble and interpret land and geographically related information, use that information for the planning and efficient administration of the land, the sea and any structures thereon; and, conduct research into the above practices and to develop them. The detailed professional tasks of the surveying engineer may involve one or more of the following activities which may occur either on, above or below the surface of the land or the sea and may be carried out in association with other professionals.

1.  The determination of the size and shape of the earth and the measurement of all data needed to define the size, position, shape and contour of any part of the earth and monitoring any change therein.
2.    The positioning of objects in space and time as well as the positioning and monitoring of physical features, structures and engineering works on, above or below the surface of the earth.
3.   The development, testing and calibration of sensors, instruments and systems for the above- mentioned purposes and for other surveying purposes.
4.   The acquisition and use of spatial information from close range, aerial and satellite imagery and the automation of these processes.
5.   The determination of the position of the boundaries of public or private land, including national and international boundaries, and the registration of those lands with the appropriate authorities.
6.   The design, establishment and administration of geographic information systems (GIS) and the collection, storage, analysis, management, display and dissemination of data.
7.   The analysis, interpretation and integration of spatial objects and phenomena in GIS, including the visualization and communication of such data in maps, models and mobile digital devices.
8.  The study of the natural and social environment, the measurement of land and marine resources and the use of such data in the planning of development in urban, rural and regional areas.
9.   The planning, development and redevelopment of property, whether urban or rural and whether land or buildings.
10.   The assessment of value and the management of property, whether urban or rural and whether land or buildings. The planning, measurement and management of construction works, including the estimation of costs.

General Objective

In addition to the general objective of the University, the B.Sc. program under interest in particular is expected to bring about change in the field of Surveying through the development of practice-oriented education, research and producing surveying Engineers who will contribute to the country’s social and economic development and substantially reduce poverty.

 Specific objectives

Specifically, the Surveying Engineering degree program at hand aspires to:

a.     Promote a strong sense of ethics and professionalism in the fields of surveying and mapping.

b.       Produce surveyors who will contribute to the country’s social and economic development and substantially reduce poverty through conducting researches in the field of surveying and mapping.

c.      Through the development of practice oriented education and research, to produce well-qualified professionals in the fields of surveying and mapping.

d.     Produce an engineer who plan, manage, monitor and evaluate the operation in any cadastral and Mapping surveys.

e.      Produce an engineer who applies basic mathematical, scientific, legal and measurement principles that form the theoretical framework of professional surveying practice.

f.      Produce an engineer who select and properly use appropriate techniques and tools to collect, analyze and interpret data to obtain optimum surveying solutions for different situations in the country.

Produce an engineer who assess a survey situation, determine the opportunities and risks for clients and others in that situation, postulate an optimum solution for the situation, implement the proposed solution, and assess the impact of the solution after implementation. Produce an engineer who undertakes reconnaissance, preliminary and construction activities in civil engineering, irrigation and construction projects. Produce an engineer who solves problems as part of a team containing members with majors in other disciplines. Produce an engineer who recognizes the potential of conflicts between the best interests of clients, society, and professional service providers, as well as ethical precepts and legal obligations to avoid or resolve these potential conflicts

HoD's Message

Welcome to the Department of Surveying Engineering which has been launched 2015E.C which is one of the leading department in the academic world. The discipline of the Department covers not only traditional land surveying but also, and even more importantly, the latest spatial information sciences and technologies. The latter includes geographic information science and systems, global navigation satellite systems and satellite remote sensing. These highly sophisticated technologies have been widely used not only for advanced scientific programmers, such as Beidou and lunar exploration missions, but also for daily living, such as individual public transport mode selection and in-car navigation. Our colleagues have been involved in upstream scientific research and downstream applied technological development. The key factors influencing the department's quality teaching and high research achievements are the innovative thinking and enthusiasm of our staff. Currently, we have approximately 7 staff members in the Department, with 4 academic staffs are on lecturer rank, and the 3(three) Technical Assistant. Apart from basic research, active engagement in applied research and knowledge transfer also exists, which further contributes by holding important roles in various professional organizations and involved in different training. Hence, our students are entitled to become chartered surveyors or engineers subject to normal further institutional examinations, after they graduate from the university. To assist and support the above research and teaching activities, the Department has well-equipped laboratories. The specific aim of the involvement is to serve the academic community and society. Through our research and teaching efforts, the Department has had a very high influence on local and international Surveying academic and professional communities. With your support, we look forward to even greater progress for our Department.
